Join us on our Barista Course and delve into the exciting world of espresso-based coffees. We will cover the journey from bean to cup and introduce you to some interesting coffee facts along the way before showing you what it takes to make a great espresso. Through demonstrations and taste testing you will gain a better understanding of what goes into pulling the perfect shot and how to โ€˜dial inโ€™ a coffee. You will look at machine maintenance, good workflow practices and how to steam milk as well as learning how to pour latte art. After completing our Barista Course you will be confident in using an Espresso Machine and ready to impress friends, family and employers.

โ€ข Sensory Experience
โ€ข Introduction to coffee: The journey from bean to cup
– Arabica & Robusta, growing, harvesting, processing, quality grading, sourcing, roasting and brewing.
โ€ข Learning how to โ€˜dial inโ€™ coffee beans
โ€ข Learning about all the variables that need to be considered when pulling espresso shots and how they influence coffee taste – includes demonstrations and taste testing.
โ€ข Leaning good workflow practices as well as cleaning and maintenance of equipment
โ€ข The theory of milk steaming and learning basic latte art skills
โ€ข Creating a coffee menu

Requirements: For Beginners and people who want to top-up their knowledge working with a professional Espresso Machine

Included in the course:

  • As much coffee as you can drink
  • Some nibbles
  • Complementary 250g bag of coffee

Duration: 3 1/2 hs (10am – 1.30pm)

Cost: ยฃ85 per person

Location: Durham Coffee Roastery – AMR Building (Unit 8), Sacriston Industrial Estate, Plawsworth Road, Sacriston, DH7 6JX, Durham

Accessibility: There are no steps to access our roastery and the floor is flat throughout, as well as parking outside on the same level. The espresso machine & grinders are however set on standard ca. 90cm high counters, for which at present I’m afraid we can not provide a lower set. Saying that, please note most of the course is theoretical, so not access to the espresso machine won’t drastically affect experience. Please do get in touch to discuss and ask away if there are any further questions. Our toilet is a fully accessible disabled toilet.

Christmas & New Year Opening Times

The roastery will be closed for Christmas and New Year from Saturday the 21st of December.

We reopen for online orders on Saturday 4th of January and orders will be processed the week commencing the 6th of January. Alternatively, if you'd like to collect in person, the roastery will open to the public again from January the 8th.
